Spring is in the air and many homeowners are starting to think about their home’s landscaping. Spring brings new beginnings and for many this inspires them to spruce up their home’s exterior!

Landscaping can be as simple or as complex as homeowners would like, but one thing it should always be is in line with the style of the home. What does that mean exactly?

Let’s look at what it means to landscape in a way that compliments your home, rather than competes with it.

How we Make your Landscaping Fit the Style of your Home

Color is Everything

First, and perhaps most obvious, is color. Do you have blue siding on your home, or a very predominate color? Your foliage should coordinate with your home’s exterior. If your home has blue siding, for example, cool toned foliage and florals would coordinate nicely. If you want something a bit more dramatic, oranges and purples contrast nicely against the blue. Additionally the color of the mulch used in flower beds and surrounding trees should also coordinate with the house. Some mulch is treated to be more cool-toned, while some have a warmer tone.

Materials Shouldn’t Compete

If you have a stone home, your landscaping should incorporate stone as well. Small stones lining flower beds is a great way to incorporate the stone in the home into the yard. Do you have a brick house? Use bricks for walkways and lining your landscaping for a seamless look. Adding large stones or boulders can also really add to your home’s landscaping, especially if the home has a stone exterior, or a cool toned siding (such as blue or gray).

Scale Matters

In addition to the colors used in your landscaping and the materials, the scale also matters. Your shrubs should be proportional to your home. Having plants that are too small or too big can look messy and out of place. By having shrubs and foliage that is the proper size, it looks like it was meant to be there, and improves the overall appearance of your home, rather than distracting from it.
